SUBJECT Report of trip to HRB State College, Pa. on 12-13 Feb. 1959.
1. A trip ~ra.s made to HRB for the purpose of determining the status
of System VII and the extent of any problems encountered.
2. HRB is still promising delivery of the system on 2 P9arch and
from all indications this date will be met. All engineering problems
have been solved and the remaining T,rork consists principally of assembly
of components and cabling and interconnecting all units on the "A" frame.
3. The problem of adding a second recorder to the system t~ra.s resolved
during this visit. By rearranging the layout of a number of units on the
"A" frame, space was found in which to locate the second recorder and
capstan power supply. ti~ith the exception of the capstan pourer supply,
all other electronics gill be automatically switched from one recorder
to the other ~?rhen the tape supply is exhausted on the first recorder.
The addition of the second recorder ~?rill provide for a total of 24 minutes
recording time as opposed to the original 12 minutes.
4. System sensitivity is running at about the level as originally
estimated, ie. -103 dbm for recorder turn-on and approximately -g5 dbm for
good solid breakout. In an excessively noisy electrical environment,
these figures could be degraded accordingly. It is hoped that the current
noise reduction program gill reduce the noise level to an acceptable value.
5. As of this date the system wilt be ready for delivery at HRB on
2 March. By the end of the second week in N~.rch the system should have
been delivered to Edwards and thoroughly bench-checked, ready for
installation in the aircraft. The date of installation hinges on the
progress of the noise reduction program, but assuming all goes Drell,
the system should be ready for flight test late in March.
