17. (Secret - JGO) Delivered to Mr. J. R. Blandford, Counsel,
House Armed Services Committee staff, for the Chairman, the
Director's letter of 21 April concerning the acquisition of the Travers'
tract.
18. (Confidential - JGO) Met with Mr. Robert Michaels, House
Appropriations Committee staff, and received from him a request for
information concerning the protest to the United States Embassy in Bonn
against "illegal interference" of U.S. intelligence agents in Berlin with
the editorial magazine, STERN.
Mr. Michaels also reconfirmed the arrangements for the
meeting Wednesday, 27 April at 2:00 p. m. with the Chairman. The
Office of Security has been advised.
19. (Internal Use Only - JSW) Senator Stuart Symington called
from his home to state that the response the Director had made to Senator
Fulbright's letter was just perfect and had been pitched in just the right way
and he wanted the Admiral and Dick Helms to know this. I thanked the Senator
very much for his help in putting this letter together.
20. (Confidential - JSW) Drexel Godfrey and Mr. Warner met with
Clifford Gaucher for about an hour and a half briefing him preparatory to
his trip to Germany. Mr. Gaucher was most impressed and most
appreciative. He stepped out and reported to Congressman Philbin on the
session and Mr. Philbin came in to express his deep appreciation for our
taking the time to do this for him and Mr. Gaucher.
21. (Secret - JSW) Mr. Sullivan, in the office of.Senator Daniel
Brewster, inquired if we could give them some assistance in connection with
possible employment as the Senator's personal secretary of one Eleanore
Carney, who is currently personal secretary to the South Vietnamese
Ambassador to the U. S. I stated we would look into this and advise.
22. (Internal Use Only - JSW) OnetaStockstill called to say there will
be a meeting of the CIA Subcommittee of House Armed Services on Wednesday,
27 April at 8:30 a.m., in Room 2212.
