These two "R" model aircraft are replacements for older U-2C model aircraft. Aircraft 383 (U-2C) was returned to Lockheed Aircraft Corp via MAC C-124. APOLLO IX Support Flights Three missions were flown in support of Apollo IX photo- graphic research which included two special cameras, the HYCON/NIKON and HYAC/VINTON. The results of these missions were satisfactory. High resolution photography was obtained as requested by the Department of the Interior to assist in determining the magnitude of the problem. The area was photographed during one flight and the film delivered to the Department of the Interior within 48 hours. SCOPE SAINT II Deployment of the U-2R aircraft to took place 17 - 26 April. During this exercise a Tactical Evalua- tion was conducted by Project Headquarters and two training flights were flown from nonstop from Edwards AFB to Edwards AFB. SNOW SURVEY The U-2R flew 25X1 to 25X1 The Department of Commerce (ESSA) requested periodic photo- graphic coverage of selected areas from February through June. This coverage was utilized to determine the Spring run off and related water resources of the Sierra Nevada Range. (13 sorties) Earth resources survey (4 sorties). Airborne Multiplex Unit Central Timing System evaluation flights (6 sorties). This exercise demonstrated the detachment's capability to deploy and conduct any mission as directed by Project Headquarters. Four training missions were flown during the deployment. The requirement to obtain photographic coverage of CIA and other U.S. installations in the Washington, D. C. and Norfolk, Virginia area was accomplished by use of the U-2R aircraft. U-2C/G photography of natural resources in support of NASA space programs and of crop production in support of KH-4 satellite program (5 sorties). BLUE GULL V U-2R deployment to Lakehurst, N. J. for ground and flight testing of carrier arrestment capability. CARRIER QUAL TRAINING Conducted at Pensacola NAS, Florida. (3 sorties). MISCELLANEOUS Testing and operational qualification of U-2R primary camera and electronic warfare systems (40 sorties). SCOPE SAINT III Detachment "G" deployed to October. Two training missions were flown and all flying was accomplished by The U-2R again nonstop flights between Edwards and on both the deployment and redeployment. For the first time buddy tactics were not employed for an over water flight. A new endurance record of 14.2 hours was established on the redeployment.
