6. Talked with Senator Jack Miller
following up on his call to the Director. He wished to see Mr. Helms on
the Consular Convention and was merely trying to catch the Director on the
Hill to make it convenient. He stated he would like our views on it from our
standpoint or any other views the Director might have on this. He added
the Director will know what he wishes to know on this. Mr. Helms has
been informed.
Subcommittee transcript to Mr. Philip Kelleher, House Armed Services
Committee staff, as requested by him. Mr. Kelleher said he would assure
its safe keeping and prompt return.
8. Delivered a note from Mr. Helms to
Representative Dante B. Fascell concerning certain recommendations by
Mr. Fascell, as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on
International Organizations and Movements. Mr. Fascell said that he
thought Mr. Helms had done a superb job in testifying before the House
Foreign Affairs Committee on 21 February 1967. Further, he felt Mr. Helms'
stand was clear in connection with the recommendation he had made.
9. Delivered a copy of our "support package"
to Mr. Thomas Rich, Administrative Assistant to Representative Samuel
Stratton,and pointed out that Mr. Stratton's strong and prompt press release
was helpful.
10.1 Received confirmation from
Representatives William Staggers (D., W.Va.), James V. Smith (R., Okla.),
Edwin D. Eshleman (R., Pa.), Lawrence G. Williams (R., Pa.), to attend
the 14 March 1967, breakfast briefing at the Agency.
11. Informed Connie Clayton, in the office
of Senator Margaret Chase Smith, that there will be some delay in responding
on as it was necessary to obtain files from Archives.
12, I Sent a copy of the Agency pamphlet to
Polly Buss lie, in t e office of Senator Robert Kennedy, in response to a
request from them for information on the CIA for forwarding to a constituent.
