Tuesday - 3 October 1967
12. (Internal Use Only - JSW) Talked with Representative Porter
Hardy, Jr. , confirming with him that we are all set for the briefing on
9 October 1967. Also delivered to Mr. Hardy, a copy of the Director's letter
to Chairman Rivers dated 25 September. I indicated to him the general
nature of our concern with S. 1035 and requested that, at his convenience,
Mr. Hardy review the letter. I offered to be of any assistance possible
in providing him with additional information. Mr. Hardy seemed sympathetic
to the problems the Agency might have and stated he would be in touch
furthe r.
13. (Internal Use Only - JSW) Talked with Messrs. Reddan, Martineau
and Garcia confirming the Director's appearance on 9 October. In response
to a question, I indicated our expectations were that we should complete this
initial phase in one day of appearance. I also discussed with them in general
terms the origins of NIEs and their relationship to the Agency with the other
components in the community. I offered to discuss this further with them
and they indicated they would like to do this before the 9th.
14. (Internal Use Only - JSW) Talked with Mr. Woodruff, Senate
Appropriations Committee staff, indicating the Director had signed the letter
to Mr. Staats on 3 October concerning disposition of financial records.
Mr. Woodruff said he would proceed with the proposed letter from Senator
Russell to Mr. Staats stating he would send this to the Chairman in Georgia.
I also gave him a general rundown on the "Wiggle Seat" story so that he
would be prepared to handle questions from members. He indicated that
both Senators Mundt and Milton Young had again expressed interest in visiting
NPIC. I stated that we would arrange this at their convenience. He will
look into this further and advise.
15. (Unclassified - JSW) Talked with Jack Stempler, Office of the
Secretary of Defense, in connection with a proposed joint meeting with Mr.
Hunter and Senator Russell Long. Stempler stated that he and Hunter had
been missing connections but he hopes to have this appointment set for
tomorrow sometime.
16. (Internal Use Only - JSW) Talked with Russ Blandford, House
Armed Services Cornmitt.ee .staff, inquiring about any potential meeting
with the Subcommittee. He stated he would check this with the Chairman
and advise. I also briefed him on the "Wiggle Seat."
