1.1 Talked with Robert Michaels, House Appropriations
Committee staff, regarding the two Government Employees' Exchange
articles. These have been shown to Chairman Mahon and Representative
Lipscomb. The Chairman's view was that these should be ignored.
Appropriations Committee staff, who indicated he did not feel that he could
concern Senator Russell with the two Government Employees' Exchange
articles in view of the many other urgent matters which stand much higher
on the priority list.

Armed Services Committee staff, some correspondence to Senator Russell.
He will prepare an appropriate response for Senator Russell and requested
that we pick up the material tomorrow so that we could check the facts.

Affairs Committee staff, on the Gross amendment to the Mutual Security bill
and got some background on it. Westphal said he would welcome any
suggestions we had with some helpful language which might be included in
the report.

Services Special Investigations Subcommittee, called indicating that
Representative Hardy very much wished the Director to appear this Thursday,
28 September, adding that he was under the impression that notices had
already gone out. I indicated that I did not think we could possibly make
this since this briefing had to be most carefully prepared. I stated, however,
that I would check this and advise.
