ADDENDUM TO THE JOURNAL
OFFICE OF LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL
Tuesday - 21 February 1967
Assistant to Senator John Tower (R., Tex.), called to seek our advice
on the Senator accepting an invitation to appear on the television program
"Meet the Press" this coming Sunday along with Senator Clark and two
others to discuss the NSA-CIA involvement. Mr. Towery explained that
Senator Tower was then in Texas and that he would have to decide on
accepting this invitation within the next 30 minutes. If he accepted he
would like to receive some information bearing on the matter from CIA
representatives who would have to meet with him in California because
of the Senator's speaking engagements up through Saturday of this week.
At the suggestion of Mr. Warner, who was with the Director on the Hill,
I spoke with Mr. FitzGerald and then informed Mr. Towery that, if the
Senator decided to accept the invitation, we would be most pleased to
arrange for a background briefing, but that our latest information was
that the four panelist were to be Senator McGee, Senator Clark,
Mr. Robert Amory, and Sam Brown. Mr. Towery said that possibly
Senator McGee could not appear. Later in the afternoon Mr. Towery
called to advise that Senator Tower, because of the press of other
business, had decided to decline the invitation to appear on the TV
program, but that the Senator was most appreciative of our willingness
to help him. Mr. FitzGerald's office was advised of the final outcome.
Relations Committee staff, called to request that we pick up a letter.
The letter addressed to the Director was picked up by courier in the
morning and delivered to in the Director's office.
