17.1 Talked with both Senator Gore and his
Administrative Assistant, Mr. William Allen, regarding a broadcast
referring to a statement by the Senator at yesterday's Senate Foreign
Relations hearing. No one from the Administration had communicated with
the Senator or his office. However, Allen had heard on a radio news
broadcast reference to the Senator's statement and the fact that the
Administration had issued a denial without naming any specific source. The
Senator indicated that he thought his statement was generally consistent with
Secretary McNamara's statement included in his posture statement released
on 26 January.
