STAT STAT X5-4-- ----Appr.-ov ..Fo ' ae x(1041 5 a CIA 9BQ. 69F OOO2#&2' Journal - Office of Legislative Counsel Page 3 Monday - 24 April 1967 14. Jay Sourwine, Senate Internal Security Subcommittee staff, called again concerning Svetlana Stalina. He said that although he had checked with us on Friday and had been advised that the Agency was not controlling her, he wanted to double check this fact. He said he had been in touch with State Department and the FBI both of whom also indicated that she was a free agent. Sourwine said it was "incredible" that she was not under the control of any one of our three agencies. I reaffirmed the position we had stated to him on Friday. A short time later, Sourwine called again and said he had been in touch with "Ernst" in the law firm representing Svetlana in connection with issuing a subpoena for her appearance before the Subcommittee. Sourwine made a rather veiled reference to the fact that Ernst mentioned that there was cooperation on the part of the firm and the Government but I did not press him on this. He said Ernst had advised him that the House Committee on Un-American Activities had already made a request for Svetlana. Sourwine was interested in knowing whether this request had been made through the Agency adding that, in accordance with their agreement with HCUA, they would not pursue a case in which HCUA was already involved. I told Sourwine we had received no request from HCUA regarding Miss Stalina and that as he knew we tried to be very careful about priorities of requests between these two Committees. Sourwine gave no indication of irritation but seemed to be interested in checking the f acts. Sourwine also asked if the Subcommittee would "run afoul of the Agency" if they looked into the case of II told him I would check on this and be in touch with him..
