Vast Red spy ring
'fliere are many angerous little. cogs in tPe
giant Russian espionage machine hard at
-Work In this and other free nations of the
world, says The Tampa Daily Times.
This fact was vividly developed recently
by Allen W. Dulles, director of the U. S.
Central Intelligence Agency, discussing prob-
e I y, counter-Intelligence and dif-
ficulties of penetrating the Iron Curtain to
obtain information about Communist political
and military planning.
Dulles was quoted in a `copyrighted Inter-
view in "U. S`. News and World Report,"
an independent weekly news maagazine pub-
lished In Washington.
But, dbserved Dulles, while CIA forces
labor to find out what is going on in the
Soviet Union and its satellites. Communists
have a.ready supply of scientific and technical
data about this country by merely picking up
our newspapers or professional journals. The
CIA director thinks we tell Russia too much.
Here is what U. S. security forces are up
against as described-.py Dulles: Everybody in
the Soviet organization is a servant of the
government. A representative of the Russian
Tass news agency works for his government
almost as much as an ambassador" ." The So-
viet intelligence organization is eor'nposed of
a widespread network of agents; they enter
and recruit assistants In all Important coun-
tries of the world and infiltrate "front" or-
ganizations,
From these vantage points it is It simple
matter to collect data and channel thorough
reports .on nearly all phases of economic, po-
litical and military life in free nations,
In the words of Dulles; "...They penetrate
and control the major labor unions in France,
Italy, Indonesia and many other countries ...
they'use political parties for their own ends
in order to bring about Communist revolur
tions ... (this) constitutes a threat behind our
North Atlantic Treaty Organization lines."
These statements from the head of this
nation's primary intelligence effort serve to
emphasize the need for constant vigilance
'both at home and abroad against the Soviet
spy system. There are no "small fry" Com-
munists who can be Ignored. Each represents
a potential enemy of freedom as we know It,
ready at any time totspeed such Information as
may be important into hands of the enemy.
To forget this is to invite disaster.
