her column of Feb. 18
refers slightingly to the Dulle
family and implies nepotism in he

This is a most unfair statement
John Foster Dulles is one of the
most able and hardest-working Sec
retarles of State we have ever had
As for being a member of a famil
with a tradition of service to ou
country that is something to b
proud of, not to be scorned.
As for "the relatives he has take
care of" Allen Dulles, according t
"Who's Who," entered the Foreig
Service of the State Department i
1916! He resigned from the Stat
Department several years later t
resume private law practice bu
joined Government service agai
during the war, and served bril
liantly overseas with the Office o
Strategic Services.
It was Walter Bedell Smith wh
chose Allen Dulles as his chief as

the agency when he, Bedell Smith
went to State Department as Unde
Secretary. At any rate Allen Dulles

to do with his brother's job.
Nor has his sister Eleanor's pres
ent job as assistant to the chief o
German Affairs. Eleanor Dulles i
an outstanding economist. She ha
made a special study of Europea
and particularly Austrian and Ger-

time taught economics at Bryn

She is the author of numerous
publications on economic subjects
Her service with the Government
goes back nearly 20 years. Sine
1945 Miss Dulles has been with th
State Department except for a brie
interval when she was `loaned' t
the National Resources Board.
