This memorandum is for information only.
We have had two inquiries today as to whether Stevenson has had his
first briefing by CIA. Bill Lawrence, of the NEW YORK TIMES, and Donald
Gonzales, of United Press, called. I gave them agreed on replies and
suggested that they make their inquiry for any details to the candidate
since we are only the agency to carry out the wishes of the candidate in
conformity with the President's instructions. They were checking here
because of the prior announcement that on 14 September Stevenson would
have his executive arrange with General Cabell for his briefings. They
will check with Stevenson.
