MEMORANDUM FOR THE ACTING DIRECTOR:
This memorandum recommends action in paragraph 2.
1. When Adlai Stevenson's representative gets in touch with General
Cabell on 14 September to arrange for briefings as per the President's
instructions, we can anticipate press inquiry as to:
(1)
Who will brief Mr. Stevenson?
(2)
Will Suez be included in briefings?
(3)
Will briefings be oral or in printed form?
(t)
How often will the briefings be given?
(5)
Will more than one official brief Mr. Stevenson?
(6)
Just what will, in general, be included in the briefings?
2. Recommend we answer inquiries with the statement that CIA will
scrupulously carry out the President's instructions; that Mr. Stevenson
will be briefed on the world in general and on such specific areas as he
may request; that CIA may have one or more briefers, depending upon the
situation; that briefings may be oral or written or a combination, as
desired; that they will be given weekly, as a general rule, but that can
be changed to meet Mr. Stevenson's wishes; that CIA will not identify the
individuals who do the briefing nor will it make public the subject or the
contents of any briefings.
