only two hours with the material which, at a minimum, would require two days
to go through.
He also discussed Svetlana Stalina. He said prior to her press confer-
ence he had hoped to have her appear before the Committee to discuss
Communist views on religion in view of the present propaganda line of the-
Communist that Communism and religion can coexist. After reading her
testimony to the effect that her religion is a general thing not tied to any
specific philosophy, he has decided not to call her.

Delivered to Frank McNamara, Staff Director,
HCUA, n article rom ampar s magazine containing scurrilous material
concerning the family of the President. McNamara said he had not previously
seen this article, but that he has a large file on the staff writer who wrote it.
He also mentioned that the New York Times is planning to do a piece on
Ramparts and that a Times reporter had been in to go over the material held
Talked to Jim Cline, House Subcommittee
on Immigration and Naturalization staff, who informed me that Mr. Newhouse
has bought the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Newhouse is a close friend of Congress-
man Peter Rodino (D., N.J.), and Congressman Michael Feighan (D., Ohio)
has now seen the light and will proceed quickly with Rodino's bill on behalf
of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty. At Mr. Cline's request, I asked

the Subcommittee on short notice to testify as to the need for this bill.

Spoke with the office of Congressman
Abraham Kazen ., Tex.) on a constituent inquiry about the CIA involvement
F They said that they would be completely guided by our
suggestion an seemed to fully appreciate the Agency's no comment policy and
said they felt most speculation concerning the Agency was actually due to the
fact that we could not respond.
I spoke briefly with Congressman Glenn
Davis (R., Wis.) explaining the circumstances under which his car had been
ticketed yesterday. Mr. Davis appreciated our call and said that while he
thought the guard might have noticed his congressional license plates, he was
glad that the guard had carried out his duty and did not want as to be too
critical of the guard.
