25X1 by HCUA. He has some doubts as to the competency of the reporter who spent only two hours with the material which, at a minimum, would require two days to go through. He also discussed Svetlana Stalina. He said prior to her press confer- ence he had hoped to have her appear before the Committee to discuss Communist views on religion in view of the present propaganda line of the- Communist that Communism and religion can coexist. After reading her testimony to the effect that her religion is a general thing not tied to any specific philosophy, he has decided not to call her. 25X1 rip, e N ;3V Approved For Release 2004/05/121: CIA-RDP70B00338R000200230048- Journal - Office of Legislative Counsel Thursday - 27 April 1967 Page 2 Delivered to Frank McNamara, Staff Director, HCUA, n article rom ampar s magazine containing scurrilous material concerning the family of the President. McNamara said he had not previously seen this article, but that he has a large file on the staff writer who wrote it. He also mentioned that the New York Times is planning to do a piece on Ramparts and that a Times reporter had been in to go over the material held Talked to Jim Cline, House Subcommittee on Immigration and Naturalization staff, who informed me that Mr. Newhouse has bought the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Newhouse is a close friend of Congress- man Peter Rodino (D., N.J.), and Congressman Michael Feighan (D., Ohio) has now seen the light and will proceed quickly with Rodino's bill on behalf of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty. At Mr. Cline's request, I asked 25X1 o be prepared to appear before the Subcommittee on short notice to testify as to the need for this bill. 25X1 25X1 Spoke with the office of Congressman Abraham Kazen ., Tex.) on a constituent inquiry about the CIA involvement F They said that they would be completely guided by our suggestion an seemed to fully appreciate the Agency's no comment policy and said they felt most speculation concerning the Agency was actually due to the fact that we could not respond. I spoke briefly with Congressman Glenn Davis (R., Wis.) explaining the circumstances under which his car had been ticketed yesterday. Mr. Davis appreciated our call and said that while he thought the guard might have noticed his congressional license plates, he was glad that the guard had carried out his duty and did not want as to be too critical of the guard. comFIDENTIAL, Approved For Release 2004/05/12: CIA-RbP70B00338R000200230048-9
