Friday - 7 April 1967
Representative O. C. Fisher (D., Tex.) and in his absence left a message
for him advising that, in fact, no CIA funds had been so utilized.
Met with Mr. Philip Kelleher,
Coups ittee, and discussed briefly the
newspaper allegation concerning use of CIA funds for support of Civil
Rights movement in the South. While I was there, Mr. Kelleher called
I I Met with Mr. Robert Michaels,
House Committee on Appropriations staff, and among other matters covered,
provided him with a copy of the FORBES editorial of 1 April. In passing,
Mr. Michaels noted that there is as yet no indication of a day for meeting
of the CIA Subcommittee during next week. He also noted that he is looking
forward to coming out to the Headquarters next Wednesday morning.
In response to his request, met with
Mr. Ben Gilleas, Senate Preparedness Investigation Subcommittee staff,
and advised him that although we had known about it the Agency was in no
way involved in the sale of M 16 rifles to Singapore. See Journal item of
4 April.
I Briefed Mr. James Kendall, Bill
Darden, Russ Blandford and Phil Kelleher on the inaccuracy of the Drew
Pearson column of this morning.
Attempted to reach Bill Spell, in the office
of Senator o n Stennis, regarding the Drew Pearson article in today's
WASHINGTON POST but learned that Mr. Spell had gone to Mississippi
with the Senator.
