2. Accompanied I to the office of
Senator Henry M. Jackson in response to the Senator's request for a
briefing on Soviet troop disposition and movement in Eastern Europe.
Miss Dorothy Fosdick and Colonel Linjard, of the Senator's staff, also
sat in on the briefing, which was based on all-source information.
(The Senator assured us that Miss Fosdick and Colonel Linjard had all
the necessary clearances. )summarized current O. B.
information regarding Soviet ground forces and explained the movements
and preparations related to the invasion of Czechoslovakia. The Senator
was told there was no security objection to his mentioning on the floor
that "the Soviets mobilized several hundred thousand men during the
Czech crisis" and that "several armies numbering more than ten divisions"
had been moved into Czechoslovakia. We assured the Senator that in
the event of early additional significant developments in this regard he
would be notified.
