3. (Internal Use Only - LLM) Spoke with Mr.
Personnel, and made arrangements for an employee interview of
recommended by John Merriam, Legislative Assistant
For the time being this case should not be considered as a 5X1
congressional referral.
5. (Confidential - GLC) Mi:ee Finley, Executive Assistant to
Representative Dante Fascell, called to say that a reporter in Key West,
Florida for the Miami Herald had been in touch with their office
regarding what the reporter referred to as increasing numbers of
boats of armed Cubans being picked up on the Florida coast. According
to the reporter, these boats have been taken into custody by the Coast
Guard but no action has been taken with regard to the individuals
involved. The reporter wanted to know how he could contact the Agency
with regard to this. I told Finley that this was a matter for joint
responsibility on the part of the Coast Guard, the Immigration and
Naturalization Service and the FBI, and not an Agency problem.
Finley also mentioned that an individual by the name of
had told Wright Langley, of the Miami Herald, that two boats
were operating out of Marathon, Florida and he thinks these
boats are owned by CIA. After discussing this withi
Deputy Chief, WH Division, I advised Finley that Congressman Fascell
was well informed regarding our activities and was aware that the
Agency was not engaging in operations of this sort. Finley said this
caused him no problems and thanked me for my response.
