SUBJECT: Questions Raised by Mr. Roland Paul, on the staff of
the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on U. S.
Agreements and Commitments Abroad
Mr. Roland Paul called today and said he would like to pose
four questions to us in connection with the Subcommittee's upcoming
hearings on our relations with various other countries. He would
like to know the estimate of the number of people who were killed
in Communist China for political reasons in the changing social
structure after the Chinese carne to power in 1949. He asked for
a similar figure for Vietnam from about 1954. He then said he
would like the intelligence community's estimate of the number of
persons who would be put to death if the Communists were to prevail
in South Vietnam and in Laos. He asked that the figures for the
latter two questions take into consideration that there will be
disruptions causing a number of people to flee. Mr. Paul said
he would like this information next week.
