NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION
WASHINGTON, D.C. 20546
DD/ST#
DEC 6 ? 1968
Honorable Richard Helms
Director, Central Intelligence
Agency
Washington, D. C. 20505
You are cordially invited to witness the second manned Apollo launch
now scheduled no earlier than 7:51 a.m. EST, Decemberu2l, 1968, at
the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
This lunar orbit mission, designated Apollo 8, will be man's first
flight into deep space beyond earth orbit. It will also be the
first manned flight of the Saturn V rocket, previously flown on two
unmanned Apollo launches. Crewmen for the mission are Frank Borman,
Commander; James A. Lovell, Jr., Command Module Pilot; and William
A. Anders, Lunar Module Pilot.
We plan a late afternoon flight from Washington to the Kennedy Space
Center the day before the launch and an Apollo Program briefing
after dinner. Air transportation to the Kennedy Space Center and
return will be provided by NASA, with the return flight scheduled
approximately three or four hours after lift-off.
I sincerely hope you will be able to attend this launch which
represents an important step in our Nation's long-standing goal
of making a manned lunar landing next year. A member of my staff
will contact your office within the next few days.
With best personal wishes,
Sincerely yours,
T. 0. Paine
Acting Administrator
