AN OBJECTIVE: Updating knowledge of the USA
In addition to reviewing foreign policy problems,
an important phase of the Seminar's study program is
designed to bring up-to-date the Membership's know-
ledge of the latest social, economic, scientific and
industrial developments in the USA. Officers serving
the United States abroad do their best to keep up
with the dynamic changes taking place in this coun-
try, but they can represent the United States better
if they possess recent, first-hand experience, acquired
while listening on the spot to the views of eminent
educators, industralists, scientists, business and
labor leaders, social workers, governors, mayors and
law enforcement authorities. During their ten months
of study, Members also perform individual travel to
the regions of the world in which they have a special
interest and prepare, as a result of their travel, case
studies and reports useful to the Agencies of the
U.S. Government.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
. The Senior Seminar in Foreign Policy, held
annually since 1958, is a component of the Foreign
Service Institute, Department of State. The Senior
Seminar is the most advanced program of studies in
international relations and foreign policy offered by
any agency of the United States Government. Each
session, which lasts from August to June, is limited
to an honor group of about 25 senior officials. Half
of these are career officers of the American Foreign
Service, who are being trained for important field
assignments such as Chiefs of Mission or Deputy
Chiefs of Mission and comparable posts in the Dep-
artment of State. The other half are officers pos-
sessing an equal degree of achievement and length
of service, nominated by the Army, Navy, Air Force,
Marine Corps and other U.S. Government Departments
and Agencies in Washington.
The average age of Members is in the mid-
40's. Their average length of U.S. Government ser-
vice is 23 years.
Membership in the Seminar is awarded on the
basis of excellence of performance, demonstrated
leadership and potential forthe assumption of greater
responsibilities.
