(Secret - GLC) Advised James Gehrig, Staff Director, Senate ron tai a1 and_Space Sciences Committee, that the Soviets launched another unmanned lunar probe at approximately 9:40 a. m. our time. 2. (Secret - GLC) Met with Ed Braswell, Chief of Staff, Senate Armed Services Committee, to deliver to him the paper he had requested on the current status of Soviet ICBM deployment and brought him up to date on a number of current intelligence items. Braswell thanked me for the ICBM paper, but said he would also like to have a paper which would reflect the progress of the ICBM program since the time of the so-called SS-9 controversy. I also asked Braswell if he needed anything further from us on our retirement legislation. See Memorandum for Record. 3. (Secret - GLC) Met with Bill Woodruff, Counsel, Senate Appropriations Committee, and left with him the Director's latest Reserve withdrawal letter dated 6 November 1970. Woodruff said he would be seeing Senator Russell this afternoon and would brief him on the two items which were mentioned in the letter at that time. I also briefed Woodruff on a number of current intelligence items. See Memorandum for Record. 4. (Confidential - GLC) Al Tarabochia, Investigator, Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, called and asked if we could provide him with a name and address of a Cuban who defected around 1967 or 1968 who was a close friend of Manuel Pineiro and who is now residing in New York. He said the defector had been mentioned in recent articles by Ky Beech and Georgia Guyer. (Secret - GLC) Met with Jim Gehrig, Staff Director, Senate Aeronautical and Space Sciences Committee, and alerted him to Soviet preparations for another attempt of an unmanned soft landing on the moon. 2. (Unclassified - RW) Tom McAndrew, in the office of Senator Claiborne Pell (D., R. I. ), called to request an application form and rochures to be sent to: 3. (Secret - JGO) Met with Ralph Preston, House Appropriations Committee staff, and delivered to him a letter for the Chairman re withdrawal from the Reserve. Mr. Preston will hold the letter until the Chairman's return to the city. I also gave him a copy of the blind memorandum of 2 November titled "Current Status of Soviet ICBM Deployment. " As an aside we discussed the continuing need for review of the various classified documents held by the Committee. Unfortunately, Mr. Preston will not be able to schedule a time during the next week due to the heavy vacation schedule.during the recess. I briefed Mr. Preston on the following items: Cienfuegos; ChiCom MRBM's; Soviet-ChiCom border; pending Soviet lunar probe; and Soviet SS-9 tests. 4. (Secret - JGO) Met with Frank Slatinshek, Acting Chief Counsel, House Armed Services Committee, as a followup to Friday's briefing and reviewed with him the numbers of Agency and DOD supported forces involved in Indochina operations. This brief general review appeared to resolve whatever question had been bothering him about the forces involved. His general reservation about the implementation of the Fulbright amendment is still apparent however. I also reviewed briefly with Mr. Slatinshek the current status of Soviet ICBM deployment as set forth in the blind memorandum of 2 November.
