SUBJECT: Telephone Call from Walter Pincus, Symington Subcommittee

cue called me this morning to give me the following informa-
1. After DIA took the position that General Bennett
would not appear unless the Director also appeared,
Pincus went to Senator Symington to suggest that the
question regarding exchange of intelligence with the
be withdrawn and the meeting be called off.
However, Symington took the position that if "they",
meaning the White House and Stevenson at State, wan
to drag everybody in, that was up to "them", As
Pincus understands it, therefore, the meeting of the
Subcommittee is scheduled for Z:30 p. in. tomorrow
afternoon at which the Director, Alexis Johnson, and
General Bennett will appear.

3. I told Pincus that this was all news to me and I did
not know what the Director's plans were and whether or
not he would be appearing Pincus then said that if the
Director can't make it tomorrow, Symington plans an
afternoon session next week with him alone on those
questions raised above that are within our responsibility.
Pincus made it clear throughout that he regretted this
situation; that he was at odds with Paul on how the matter
should be handled and that he was critical of the way State
and the White House had handled this whole problem.
