Tuesday - 18 August 1970
6. (Confidential - LLM) Senator Barry Goldwater (R. , Ariz. )
called and in a very agreeable manner asked if we had contacted Boyd
Edwards whom he had earlier referred us to as having some interesting
information on the situation in Burma. Later, based on discussion with
Messrs, of FE Division, and with the quick support
of Mr o called Judy Rooney, the Senator's personal
secre ary, an o her that we were aware of the activities of the person-
alties which had come to Edwardsr attention but that we are glad to meet
with Edwards and have an appointment with him. Miss Rooney said the
Senator would be very pleased to hear this.
7. (Unclassified - JMD) Mae Sykes, Congressional Liaison Office
of State Department, called to say she had received a request from Louise
O'Brien, House Foreign Affairs Committee staff, for a list of the names of
cabinet members of all the African countries. She asked that this listing be
up to date. Miss Sykes asked us if she could have permission to send
25X1 Miss O'Brien a copy of CIA's publication After checking
with Information Services Group of CRS, miss y. es was m ormed that she
could send the publication after removing the cover (which identifies it as
a CIA document).
8. (Secret - GLC) Met with Ed Braswell, Chief of Staff, Senate
Armed Services Committee, and briefed him on an Agency activity in
connection with the Middle East situation, emphasizing particularly the
sensitivity of the Agency's role and the fact that all policy aspects were
in the hands of the State Department.
I also informed Braswell of Chairman Rivers' position with respect
to our legislative package on retirement. I discussed with Braswell the
advisability of a single bill which would cover only our retirement ceiling.
He saw no advantage to our abandoning our other legislative proposals
unless we were in an absolute crisis on the ceiling, which is not the case
at the time. It was agreed that we would discuss this further when the
press of military procurement legislation is out of the way.
