Houston, Warner an d l attanded a meeting with 25X1 State Department officials: Colgate Prentice, Deputy Assistant for Congressional Relations; Stanley Futterman, East Asian and Pacific Affairs; and Thomas Pickering, Deputy Director for Bureau of Politico- Military Affairs. The meeting was at their request to discuss possible congressional action on the so-called Fulbright amendment to the Defense Appropriations Act. We discussed several possible provisions which might come out of the House-Senate conference on the bill. While no conclusions were reached, it appeared the State Department representatives appreciated the Agency's position with regard to some of these alternatives, .It was agreed that we would keep in touch regarding subsequent developments on the bill.
