SUBJECT : Consideration of Using Fuliispace at Records Center
1. The following is in answer to your request that we evaluate
the use of Fullspace motorized shelving for possible use in the Records
Center. It is understood that considering the feasibility of using
this compacting type of shelving is only one of the many alternatives
to be weighed against the construction of an addition to the present
Records Center building.
2. This evaluation is based on the installing of 88 motorized
Fullspace units in the same areas now utilizing rows of 15" and 30"
steel shelving. Description of the 88 Fullspace motorized units is
as follows:
83 of the units would consist of 5 double face
moveables, each 11+' long x 30" deep x 12k" high.
In addition each of these 83 units would have
two stationary rows 11+' long x 15" deep x 121+"
in height.
The remaining units would consist of 5 double
face moveables, each 10:1' long x 30" deep x
1211" high. In addition each of the 5 units
would have 2 stationary rows 101' long x 15'
deep and 124" in height.
3. The 83, 14" long motorized units, consisting of 5 moveables
and 2 stationaries, will accommodate 1,1+40 boxes. The 5, 10-1" long
motorized units consisting of 5 moveables and 2 stationaries, will
hold 1,080 boxes.
4. The placement of ceiling and/or roof supports prohibit us
from adding more moveables in any of the 88 units. This restricts us
from obtaining the maximum benefit from this motorized system, in both
floor space savings and. motor capability.

5. Each motor is capable of moving a maximum of 60,000 pounds.
With the arran?ement we are forced to work with, we would be moving a
maximum of only 42,000 pounds. The cost of each motor including safety
mechanisms has been estimated to be $1,500. As the company has not yet
marketed the motorized version this is only an estimated price. I feel
that before marketing this, product the company may be forced to include
an additional safety control. if this is required, the cost of same
would naturally be passed on to the consumer and. the $1,500 figure
for each of the 88 units could be increased..
6. Based on 10 shelf openings for all 88 units, the use of Full-
space will, in accordance with our space layout, provide storage for
124,920 record center boxes. The present Federal Prison Industry
type shelving accommodates 97,680 boxes. The capability of storing
27,210 additional, boxes (through use of Fullspace) represents an
increase of 2&;1o.
7. The 88 units of motorized Fullspace will approximate $772,000.
In addition to this, we must consider the cost of service contracts
for all the units. If any of the units become inoperative it would
be impossible to move the 14' rows manually.
8. Because of the floor space restrictions (supports) and the
excessively high cost of the equipment I do not feel that we should
consider this as an alternative.
