Forty Camelot Projects "Special Warfare Area Handbook , for Ethiopia," a 620-page volume pre- pared by the Special Operations Re- search Office', The' American Univer- ? sity, Washington, D.C., under con- ' tract with the U.S. Department of the' ..Army, contains a detailed descrip-- tion of the areas And prospects of , f'counter.:insurgent", action ? in that country.. This handbook has an ? 820-page "twin sister," prepared by 'the same research office for the same government department, and it deals ? in no less detail with possible' 'counter-insurgent" action in Japan. , The two handbooks were shown in the Senate on August 25 by Senator Wayne Morse (Democrat, Oregon). Speaking of the expansion of U.S. spy networks in other countries, he recalled the ignominious flop of "Project Camelot" in Chile this sum- rner? when American agents -.(inas- ? querading as "scientists" were caught red-handed spying for the Pentagon. ' The Senator stressed that he had in- ? formation about similar projects in !at least forty. countries, including .14igeria, the .Sudan, Brazil, Cyprus, Liberia, Egypt, Indonesia, Panama, guinea and Venezuela. , "I predict that more Camelot proj- ects will be. . discovered in Latin America and elsewhere," Morse said. The Pentagon is making increasing use of sociological, economic, histor- ical and other research as a smoke- . screen for its espionage activity. ' The developments in South Viet- nam, the Congo and the Dominican Republic expose the real aims of the Pentagon's ? "counter-insurgency" ' concept. The handbooks for. Ethiopia and Japan show that it plans further criminal ventures. ? Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @ 50-Yr 2014/03/19: CIA-RDP73-00475R000i ni nannnR_a
