COURIER ' e. 26,853 I S. 27,448 vp):::' Date: 1 NOV 10 1964 Cuban Invasion Planned Bay of Pigs Veterans Won't Repeat Goofs. By VIRGINIA PREWETE tion. It will be led by one of NANA Staff Writer New York CAN ANTI-CASTRO veterans of the Bay of Pigs, backed by a Cuban rum millionaire, over- turn Castro? Over 200 former officers who were in the Bay of Pigs disas- ter are staking their lives that they can. The rum manufacturer, Dr. Jose M. Bosch, has spent two years and $100,000 creating a ci- vilian organization called RECE (Representation of Cuban Ex- iles). RECE is now financing preparations by survivors of the invasion Brigade 2506 for a new invasion strike at Castro with up to 20,000 men. Such a strike, they are con- vinced, would topple Castro. They cite repeated statements of Juanita Castro, Fidel's sis- ter, that 90 per cent of Cubans are ripe for revolt. . The Brigade 2506 veterans have enrolled able-bodied Cu- bans throughout the world. The latter are now being sent to Central America for military training. Claim Thousands "We have lists of 30,000 Cu- bans ready to fight Castro," said Dr. Rafael Labrada at Brigade 2506 headquarters in New York City. "They have enrolled in our 'military censu s' taken throughout the United States, in Latin America, in Europe, even in the Philippines and the Con- go. We have a list of 1,800 right there in New York City." U.S. neutrality' laws prevent their military training on U.S. soil. "But we've been giving hun- dreds of volunteers basic physi- cal training to harden them up on the farms of friends not far outside the city," Dr. Labrada said. Already 217 former invasion brigade officers are at work ere- the three top officers of Brigade 2506, Maj. Erneida Oliva, now in Central America. Most of the; officers had received advanced; training in the U.S. Army af- ter they were ransomed from ) Castro's prisons. ' "We won't repeat mistakes," said Dr. Labrada. "We'll have ships, guns, tanks, anti-aircraft, everything we need, when we hit Cuba again. In the Bay of Pigs, we had supplies for only six hours. Next time we'll be prepared to fight ten days." Since it takes around $1,200 per soldier to put a task force into battle, the cost of a new- born brigade officer and other Cubans are confident that Dr. Bosch can raise that amount. Dr. Bosch is 'head of family? - owned Bacardi factories in Pu- ? erto Rico, Mexico and Brazil that yield an estimated $15 mil- lion profit annually. And "Pe- pin" Bosch enjoys the confi-, dence of Cuban and U.S. mil- lionaires and of Latin Ameri- cans ,in government. "If he'll put up $1,000,000 of his own money, he can raise 9100 million," said a former Cu- ban ambassador to the United States. "But we haven't seen the million." Pepin Bosch has already spent nearly half a million pre- paring the way for the new mili- tary, strike against Castro. He spent 6100,000 to query 100,000 Cuban exiles the world over and obtain the approval of 40,- 000 for RECE. He also put up over $250,000 to help launch the U.S. Commit- tee for a Free Cuba, to keep the anti-Castro cause 'alive. The Brigade 2506 veterans are convinced Bosch can come through with the necessary money to build their second in- vasion force without U.S..back- ? ing or Central Tn lliuni-n Ages- 144 t.!r new114.1ft87..?.rgaFt.P7P Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @ 50-Yr 2013/12/20: CIA-RDP73-00475R000401590005-4
