(Confidential - GLC) Talked with Stuart French, OSD/ISA, about the letter the Director has received from Senator Symington setting forth the charter of his Subcommittee on U. S. Agreements and Commit- ments Abroad and his request for cooperation with members of the Sub- committee staff. French agreed that the item in the statement of the Subcommittee's responsibility having to do with the intelligence community was new and agreed that this posed problems for both Defense and the Agency. He said the matter had been taken up with Chairman Stennis who is reluctant to take issue with Chairman Fulbright on what Stennis regards as a legitimate area of interest on the part of the Foreign Relations Com- mittee. It is French's opinion (he is a former minority staff member of the Senate Armed Services Committee) that Senator Margaret Chase Smith could be influential with Stennis on this matter. French and I agreed to keep in touch on this situation. 6. (Unclassified - RCR) Miss Naughton, in the office of 25X1A Representative John A.
