R. 6483, the bill for promotion of members of the Marine Corps to full general was reported out by the full Committee but that one member has insisted during discussion that the number of generals authorized by the bill be reduced from four to three. From present indications, a member may well propose a similar amendment on the floor of the House when the bill comes up for consideration. Mr. Cook told me that the leadership has recommended that the Committee procure a rule on the bill and not attempt passage on either the Consent Calendar or by suspension of the rules. Although a letter requesting hearing by the Rules Committee on the bill is in the mill, the hearing cannot take place earlier than the week of 7 June. He also suggested that he wait until we have made our contacts with the various members of the Subcommittee before he attempts final scheduling of a "Subcommittee meeting" at the Agency. 10.
