S lie referred to the Beecher article in this morning's New York Times and said Senator Jackson was most interested in receiving a briefing on the Soviet missile programs. She referred specifically to the statement in the Beecher article that the Soviets now have more than 60 new silos. I told her I would look into the situation and later made arrangements for Mr. Maury and Mr. Duckett to meet with her on the Hill. 2.1 Briefed Bill Woodruff, Counsel, Senate Appropriations Committee, on the new information concerning Soviet ICBM sites. Woodruff suggested that we try to catch Senators Ellender and Milton Young on the Senate floor to give them this briefing. When we were unable to catch Ellender and Young, I advised Woodruff and asked him to convey the information to them. He said he would. 3. F_ I reported he had talked with Edward Lyerly, Deputy Legal Adviser for Administration, State Department, with regard to the hearings being conducted by the Hanley Subcommittee on Employee Benefits on legislation similar to Senator Ervin's bill. I has now touched base with DOD, Civil Service Commission, and State Departmen 4 Made arrangements for I Staff, to review testimony given before the House Special Committee to Investigate Communist Activities in the U. S. in July 1930. 5. Mr. Duckett and I met with Senator John Stennis, Chairman, and Ed Braswell and Jim Woolsey, staff members, Senate Armed Services Committee, whom Mr. Duckett briefed on recent developments regardi] Soviet ICBM silos. 6. In response to a request from Senator Jackson that Dorothy Fosdick, of-his u committee on National Security and International Qperations staff.,be briefed on the latest Soviet ICBM in ormation, Mr. Duck e and I met with Miss Fosdick and Richard Perle, also of the Subcommittee staff, and brought them up-to-date on the latest information regaardpping the Soviet I&?&(oRgKpr Release 2003/10/21 E7 B00296R00020012004LRC, 9/24/2004
