Symmes, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations, called to say that Senator Lowell P. Weicker (R. , Conn. ) had recently requested and received a briefing by a Department officer on the John Downey case, but had expressed a desire to hear from the Agency on any additional information which we might have. At Symmes' suggestion, I agreed to follow up by getting in direct touch with Weicker. 6. I I Hand-carried to George Murphy, on the 25X1C staff of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy, a number of clippings provided us by 7. Talked to Bill Woodruff and Fran Hewitt, on the staff of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and asked if we could borrow a copy of the hearings on the Second Supplemental Appro- priations Bill for 1952 containing testimony by General Walter Bedell Smith. These hearings are apparently in Appropriation Committee archives but they will try to locate them for us. We are interested in them in connection with the OLC history. 8. I I Hand-carried to J. Sourwine, Chief Counsel, Senate Internal Security Subcommittee, _the text of the Kommunist article he had requested and a copy of the Hungarian release having to do with the draft letter prepared for the use of Senator James O. Eastland and other members of the Senate on Radio Free Europe in 1967. In return Sourwine provided us with a copy of one draft of that letter. 9.1 ' Delivered to the offices of Representative Bella S. Abzug (D., N. Y.), and Senators Edward Kennedy (D. , Mass.), Frank Church (D., Idaho), George McGovern (D., S. Dak.), George -Aiken (R. , Vt.), Jacob Javits (R. , N. Y.), Birch Bayh (D. , Ind. ), Stuart Symington (D. , Mo. ), Mike Mansfield (D. , Mont.), and J. W. Fulbright (D., Ark.) FBIS items in which their names were mentioned. 10. Delivered to Mr. Courtney Pace, in the office of Senator Eastland (D. , Miss. ), a package of articles related to the Case amendment which the-Senator had requested the other day. SECR T. McKevitt (R. , Colo. ), called RFE for sorre background material to use in answering constituent inquiries generated by the proposed legislation introduced by Senator Case and Representative Reid. RFE will send Coleman suitable material. 12. T. 5ourwine called in connection with his earlier request to or a copy of "The National 25X1 Liberation Movement in Latin America" and said that he had been misadvised by the Library of Congress and it does not have the work. Further, he understands that the work is "one of yours" and said he would treat it accordingly for his information only. JOHN M.
