1. (Internal Use Only - JGO) Received a call from Mr. Bernard
Poirier, Special Assistant to Senator Mike Gravel (D. , Alaska), who told
me that the Senator was requesting our assistance in a matter relating to
their office.

provide such information that would be available here at Headquarters
but that the problem is one for referral to the State Department for their
action. He thanked me and said that he would contact Assistant Secretary

called Mr. Poirier and told him that we have no record of an,r contact with
Mr. the name he had given me on the previous call.
25X1A Mr. Poirier said the State Department is now working on the matter and
thanked me for our assistance.

2, JGO) I received a call from Mr. Raymond
O'Neill, Office o ecuri Management, DOD, who told me that they are
processing the travel of Senator Lloyd Bentsen (D. , Texas) for a trip to
the Middle East starting on 4 January. Senator Bentsen will be accompanied
by Colonel William B. Arnold, Air Force escort officer. Mr. O'Neill
will forward a copy of the itinerary and clearances to me through
OS.

3. II- JGO) Messrs. Maury and met with Chairman
Nedzi, Intelligence Subcommittee, and Frank Slatinshek, Assistant Chief
Counsel, House Armed Services Committee, and briefed them on the current
situation in Laos; intelligence community structure; the FY 1972 Agency
budget and staff personnel strength; and "deficiencies"in the present 25X1A
espionage laws. Chairman Nedzi also asked about the status of the Deputy
Director's position and discussed some of the recent press coverage he
has received. See Memorandum for the Record.
