I Mr. J. Sourwine, Chief Counsel, Internal Security Subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee, called in behalf of Mr. Kelly, a reporter for the Washington Evening Star, who was then sitting in Mr. Sourwine's office. According to Mr. Sourwine, Mr. Kelly was compiling material for a forthcoming article on the plight and manner in which refugees had escaped the Iron Curtain and other Communist countries. Mr. Kelly realized that he could not inquire into the manner of escape of political defectors; however, he would appreciate any leads or suggestions that the Agency could offer. I suggested that perhaps the recent plight of the Jews from the Soviet Union might present an effective story. I also suggested that the State Department might be able to furnish informa- tion. Mr. Sourwine then requested the name of an Agency official that Mr. Kelly could talk directly to on this matter. Mr. Angus Thuermer's name was given. Mr. Thuermer was subsequently alerted to Mr. Sourwine's call. SECRET Approved For Release 2007/02/07 : CIA-RDP73B00296R000300260018-2
