1, Jae Wolf of State called to say teat .e is
the Department's pom o contact with the Symington Subcommi~t~e and
they're wo rking on a re spons e to Symington' s round robin lette .- ~o
State.; Defense, and CIA of 9 March which among other thinsrac~uests
"any special security clearances for Subcommittee staff mem ~E~rs
Lowenstein and Moose. Wolf and I agreed that they might be g _v;n
SI clearances but not TKH clearances and that the CIA and Defer se
responses to Symington should simply note that we understand ,~ia;,e
is handling the clearance problem. Wolf said he had been in tc:aLh
with Mr, Lehman of Kissinger's staff and this idea, that we wcu.d let
them be processed for SI but not TKH, was all right with the VV :z~.e House.
Later Ambassador Symmes, Deputy Assistant Secretar;r of
State (Congressional Relations), called in the same connection 3~~d we
covered the same ground,
Shortly after Mr, Wolf called back and asked that we plawse
hold up our response to Symington pending the outcome of the ~~f~partment's
meeting tomorrow in the Pentagon at which time the whole sec~zrity 25X1
clearance problem will be reviewed.
3. (Internal Use Only - JMM) On the Director's instr~zr.tions I
called the office of Senator 5axbe (R. , Ohio) to say that we unc..erstood
the Senator planned a trip to Vietnam in early April and would be glad to
give him a situation briefing prior to his departure 25X1
The Senator's secretary said she woi_ld pass
the message and let us know the answer,
