MEMORANDUM FOR TEE DIRECTOR
1. This memorandum recommends action in Paragraph 6.
2. Charles J. V. Murphy, of FORTUNE, apologizes for his inability to keep
his appointment with you at 3:30 pm today. He has been sent to New York to do
a profile on Cardinal Spellman which will be part of a LIFE issue devoted to the
Cardinal and the influence of the Roman Catholic Church in America, and in the
world. Murphy wil. be in New York for a week.
3. Murphy asks if I can find out if he might get reservations on the same
plane you will use in returning from New York on 14 December. He would not wish
to impose on you but this might give him an opportunity to discuss a proposed
book with you. I told him you sometimes get a flight in a MATS plane. He said
if you are flying in a MATS plane, he knows he can get space on such a flight
if he isn't imposing. I said I'd make inquiry as to when you are returning and
how but I just don't know. If you are not returning to Washington on 14- December
Murphy would like to see you in New York.
/4. He further asks, if these efforts to see you in New York or enroute from
New York to Washington fail, will you see him next Saturday or Sunday, either at
his house over a drink, or wherever you wish.
5. He asks that you understand how urgent he thinks a discussion is, and
how sorry he is that circumstances beyond his control, cse him to ask to be
excused from his appointment today.
6. RECOMMENDATION: That you see him next Sunday over a drink, at his
Georgetown residence.
