in "THE U2 AFFAIR," (Ran-
dom House, $4.95) go on to
say: "When he returned, the
gcwerrunent led the effort to
banish the unpleasant mem-
ory of the U2 affair� by
.casting him in the role of a
hero. The truth is he was
neither. He was an ordinary
man sent out to do an extra-
ordinary .nission."
One :in agree with the
sununr.tiin of Powers as a
person, but there seems to
have ktirn no 'effort to place
POWeid in the role of either
villtin or hero. The authors
go oa to question the right
of the CIA to ..,"engage in
multifarious activities" out-
rieih the gathering of ialorma-
ten. It is a complaint with
whit h it is difficult to agree.
