Allen Dunes on the Spy's Trade
THE CRAFT OF INTELLIGENCE, by Allen Dulles (Harper
& Row, )4.95).
By Dorsey Woodson
ur ERE is a tcxtbook for any college

Craft of Intelligence" is simply a primer
The author's qualifications
for writing such a text are
impeccable. He has spent near-
ly half a century in intelligence
activity. A successful spy, he
was the main force in shaping
the Central Intelligence
Agency.
While plying his delicate
and dangerous trade be ab-
sorbed the leqcons of secrecy.
This is a wonderful thing to

find in a former director of
the CIA, but it is a definite
inhibition in a writer of .non-
fiction books.
WHICH IS to say that any-
body looking for startling reve-
lations or even for many de-
tails of espionage work is go-
ing to be disappointed by Mr.
Dulles' book. He departs at
times from the instructor's
pose, but only to repeat state-
ments he has made before,
woos' them: The CIA never
reported that a Bay of Pip in-
vasion would open up a. popu-
lar revolt in Cuba; it never has
made policy, and no American
ambassador has ever been an
agent of the CIA: the Soviet
intelligence apparatus is no
bedew than ours, only much
larger in size and bank ac-
count.
TWO REVEALING threads
run throughout the book. The
first is his unflinching hatred
for communism.
The second is his ever-pres-
ent sense of professionalism.
He refers to intelligence as
his craft, and it is apparent
that he has devoted his adult
life to its mastery. He has suc-
ceeded to the extent of com-
mitting at least one error.
Early in the book he refers. "ak-
Maj. (fen. William 3.:Dono-
van, who organized thy .World
War II Office of Sfilitegkr
Services, as "the father of mod-
ern US. intelligence."
One does not have to he a
student of world affairs to
know that such a title can be,
correctly bestowed only on Mr.
Dulles himself.
