MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Conversation with Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel,
House Armed Services Committee
On receiving word fro that Mr. Slatinshek was
put out at not having gotten an answer to 1 request for a date when we
would be ready to brief the Intelligence Operations Subcommittee on
the reorganization of the community, etc. , and not having been included
in Chairman Nedzi's yesterday visit to Headquarters, I called Slatinshek
and explained that:
a. We had not understood that we owed him a call to set
a date, being under the impression that they would set a date
and call on us. I said we apologized for this misunderstanding.
b. I said the purpose of inviting Mr. Nedzi out originally was
to show him the Cuban missile exhibit which Slatinshek had already
seen, the plan being that Mr. Nedzi would stop by on his way to
work. This plan escalated later to include a private lunch with
the Director and briefings on the reorganization of the community,
Indochina and the classification problem. Slatinshek had been
under the impression that we had briefed Mr. Nedzi on the Hill
without his being present, and when he understood that the original
quick visit to Headquarters had escalated to include a full day's
visit through no fault of the Agency, he seemed mollified. He
said he would talk to Mr. Nedzi to see if he still wanted the
Subcommittee briefing.
