Approved For Release 2006/08/01 : CIA-RDP74B00415R000200020016-7 8 December 1971 MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD SUBJECT: Conversation with the Director re DDCI Today I told the Director that Ed Braswell, Chief Counsel, Senate Armed Services Committee, had informed me that Chairman Stennis had registered his views regarding a new DDCI with Henry Kissinger. I said I had had a friendly discussion the preceding evening with General Al Haig, White House staff, in which we had talked about the Administration's problems with Congress on matters concerning the intelligence community, and on the basis of this talk I felt I could, if the Director wished, go back to Haig on the question of the DDCI appoint- ment. However, I said I was not recommending this since Stennis had registered his views to Kissinger and I assumed that anything I said to Haig would also end up going to Kissinger. The Director agreed that we might as well let the matter drop at this stage. JOHN M. MAURY Legislative Counsel Distribution: Original - O&M - DDCI Chrono 1 - Sen. Armed Services.
