Approved For Release 2005/06/09 : CIA-RDP74B00415R000200020017-6 JNTEF NAL UZOE ONLY SUBJECT: Information from Mr. Art Lundahl, D/NPIC, Concerning Senator Ellender's Trip to the Antarctica 1. In response to Senator Allen J. Ellender's request that we "winterize" his camera for his forthcoming trip to Antarctica, the following information was provided by Mr. Lundahl, Director of NPIC. Senator Ellender will be part of Operation Deep Freeze, Naval Task Force 43, the naval support force for Antarctica. The Commanding Officer, Admiral D. L. Welch, and the rest of the force have left Washington. One member of the team, Lt. Comdr. Schutze (telephone code 11-33711) is here and will travel with the Senator when Congress recesses. Comdr. Schutze recommends that Senator Ellender not winterize his own camera (it involves removal of all lubricants and causes wear which shortens the life of the camera and parts). He should bring his camera, as is, with plenty of Kodachrome II film and a supply of batteries for pictures indoors and in other warm areas. 2. Lt. Ralph Lewis (a graduate of a southern California photog- raphy school) will meet the Senator in Antarctica. He is in charge of the photo detachment and will provide the Senator with suitable cameras and equipment for his use in Antarctica. He will not need a pouch for his camera under these circumstances. 3. The above information was passed to Mr. C. B. Morrison, on Senator Ellender's staff, this morning with the statement that the Agency did not have the capability for winterizing the Senator's camera but this information was supplied to us by the Navy experts on the subject. Mr. Morrison subsequently called me and said he had contacted Lt. Comdr. Schutze directly and Schutze not only did not confirm these arrangements, but expressed some reservation about the Navy's carrying them out. After conferring again with Mr. Lundahl, I contacted Mr. Rady Johnson, Assistant to the Secretary of Defense (Legislative Affairs), and explained the situation to him. Mr. Johnson said he would get in touch with the Navy about this and make certain the necessary arrangements were made in accordance. with our statement to Senator Ellender.
