MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Telephone Call From Mr. J. Sourwine, Chief Counsel,
Senate Internal Security Subcommittee
Transcript
1. Mr. J. Sourwine called late this afternoon and said he had been
instructed by Chairman Eastland to poll the members of the Internal Security
Subcommittee on the possible release of testimony given before the Sub-
committee on the case. Sourwine said this had been
prompted by requests from various newspaper people following the release
by the Senate Forei n Relations Committee of testimony given before that
Committee on the case. According to Sourwine, Chairman Eastland
favors release oft e tes imony but wants the members polled. Sourwine
said he is preparing a memorandum to the members on the subject and
feels that the memorandum should indicate what the Agency's position is
with respect to the release of this trans rrint containing the testimony of
numerous Agency witnesses including: General Walter
Bedell Smith, Messrs. Frank Wisner, awr , and Walter 25X1
Pforzheimer. Sourwine said he would only have a few days time in which
to prepare the memorandum and dispatch it.
2. Mr. Sourwine said he could not see why the Agency would object
to the publication of this testimony now that approximately 20 years has
passed since the testimony was giveq ;;nd most of the key eo le involved 25X1
have either died or left the Agency.
3. I told Sourwine that while I had heard many references to this
testimony I was not familiar with it personally and did not know whether
the Agency had a copy of the transcript. I said I was quite certain that
in reviewing our position in the matter our people would want to review
the transcript itself. Sourwine claimed that the Agency had a copy of

the transcript at one time and presumably made a copy of it, but he added
that we could obtain another copy from him if necessary. I told Sourwine
I would look into the matter and be in touch with him as soon as possible.
