3. (Internal Use Only - JGO) Talked tol FE Division, 25X1
who told me that AID is going to the field to clear a response to Representative
Burt Talcott (R0 , Calif.) concerning a constituent complaint that AID and Air
America had interfered with a shipment of Bibles by the Underground Evangelical
Society for delivery from Laos to China. AID's draft response indicates that
the shipment of Bibles was sent to an individual employed by AID in Laos and
that AID had refused authorization for use of Air America, a contract carrier,
to transport the Bibles. This response will be cleared with the AID office in
Laos prior to transmittal to Representative Talcott.
4. (Secret - GLC) Talked with Dorothy Fosdick, Staff Director,
Senate Subcommittee on National Security and International Operations, by
way of followup to Senator Jackson's request that we get in touch with her if
we had any new information on the situation in the Middle East. I told her
there was really nothing new except for Sadat's replacement of his war
minister and the fact that the Soviets were working to restore their relation-
ships with the Egyptians but efforts thus far appear not to have been productive.
Miss Fosdick called late in the day and said Senator Jackson had asked
if we would translate into French and German for him an address which he
will give to the North Atlantic Assembly meeting. I told Miss Fosdick I
would check with our people on this and see what our priorities were. When
I suggested that they use the facilities of the Library of Congress, Miss Fosdick
said they had done this at our suggestion once before and commented that the
Library of Congress' translation had been very poor and had created some
embarrassment for the Senator. I told her I would be back in touch with
them on this tomorrow.
