1. (Internal Use Only - PLC) Met with Diana Dillion, in the office
of Representative Edward P. Boland (D., Mass.), and discussed with her
2. (Internal Use Only - PLC) Met with Mr. Phil Argento, in the
office of Senator John V. Tunney (D., Calif.), and discussed a proposed
reply to a letter from a constituent who commented on an article appearing
in a Eureka, California, newspaper. The article reported that CIA, FBI,
and Treasury were conducting .an investigation of the bombs placed in safety
deposit boxes of several banks in the U. S. The constituent was seriously
concerned that the Agency was engaging in internal security matters. I
assured Mr. Argento that the Agency was in no way associated with the
investigation and he stated he will reply to the constituent accordingly.
3. (Unclassified - RW) Miss Meloney, in the office of Representative
Dominick Daniels (D., N. J.), called to request an employment interview
for This was arranged for 10 a. m. tomorrow with
Personnel.
4. (Internal Use Only - JGO) Talked to Mr. Ralph Preston, House
Appropriations Committee staff, who told me that Representative Tom Bevill
(D. , Ala.) has been assigned to the full Committee as a new member but no
assignment has been made to replace Representative Andrews on the Defense
Subcommittee. Mr. Preston does not know whether to expect an assignment
to fill Representative Andrews spot before our meeting with the Committee
on Thursday.

1. After talking to f Security, I
called Representative James Cleveland (R. , N. H. to say at the woman he
had inquired about had indeed had some contact with our
ffice but so far as we could tell from our investigation to
date we have never had any formal contractual relations with her and had
passed her on to the FBI. I suggested that he query the Bureau but
assured him we would look more closely into the case and give him a further
report in a few days.
2. I Confirmed an appointment for the Director
to meet with Senator John Stennis, in the Senator's office, at 10:00 a. m.
on Monday, 24 January 1972.

3. I I Met with Ed Braswell, Chief Counsel, Senate
Armed Services Committee, and gave him a paper on comparative pay-scales
of regular and irregular forces in Laos. Also discussed the Director's upcoming
briefing. See Memo for the Record.
4.1 1 In response to their request I met with Captain
Bauser and George Murphy, of the staff of the Joint Committee on Atomic
Energy, and briefed them on the Soviet construction of a large new naval
vessel. They were completely satisfied with the briefing and said they
would like us to keep them informed of any further information on the ship.
5. I I In response to Bill Woodruff's, Senate
Appropriations Committee staff, request yesterday, I took
of the Security office, to Woodruff's office where he changed one of the safe
combinations there and checked over the operation of another safe.

10. (Internal Use Only - PLC) Miss Jane Goforth, in the office of
Senator Henry M. Jackson (D. , Wash. ), called for assistance in preparing
a reply to a letter from a constituent who commented on a radio program
that Congress does not know how much money is appropriated to CIA.
I informed Miss Goforth of the statutory and other requirements to protect
the overall budget and of the congressional review through the Appropriations
Committees of the House and Senate. I offered to assist Miss Goforth in the
preparation of her reply; however, she said the information I provided would
suffice. I also mentioned our pamphlet on the origins of the Agency, and
she requested a copy to send to the constituent.
11. (Internal Use Only - PLC) Mr. Ed Dunn (Area Code 716-546-
4900), in the Rochester office of Representative Frank Horton (R. , N. Y. ),
called concerning a call he had received from
as " I' requested certain information over the phone.
Mr. lasked Mr. Dunn to contact CIA to determine if
was with the Agency and how to handle the inquiry. I checked personnel,
security and DCS and all were negative. I called Mr. Dunn back and advised
25X1A him to inform Mr. that we were quite sure that is not
25X1A associated with CIA and he should request the individual to come in o his
office and properly identify himself before he furnishes any information. If
suspects the individual is impersonating a federal agent, he
should immediately notify the FBI.
