8. Called Sam Goldberg, in the office of
Senator Charles Mathias (R. , Md. ), and gave him the address of the
Strategic Services Unit which he will relay to a husband and wife writing
team who would like to review certain material involving a relative who was
associated with OSS (see Journal of 12 July 1972). The handling of this request
was coordinated with Chief, IS/SS.
9, Called Ed Braswell, Senate Armed
Services Committee, concerning Senator Symington's letter to Secretaries
Rogers and Laird requesting full details on expenditures in Laos and he
agreed that: (1) the information concerning CIA expenditures should not be
provided on jurisdictional grounds and (2) such expenditures should not be
subject to a GAO audit as Senator Symington intends. Messrs. I
OPPB, and FE, were advised accordingly in connection with
clearance of State's proposed reply to Senator Symington's letter.
10. 1 1 I talked to Mr. John Sullivan and Miss
Helen Mattas, House Foreign Affairs Committee staff, concerning the
handling of the transcript of the Director's appearance scheduled for
Thursday, 27 July. Arrangements were made by Miss Mattas through the
Office of the Official Reporters to Committees for assignment of a reporter
for the hearing. A single copy of the transcript will be made. The transcript
will be retained by the Agency subject to call by the Committee.
