9, Met with Mr. Frank Slatinshek, Chief Counsel, 25X1A
House Armed Services Committee, and gave him a copy of Judge Bryan's
opinion in granting permanent injunction against Victor Marchetti's publication
of material concerning the Agency. Mr. Slatinshek was pleased to receive it.
Mr. Slatinshek told me that as a followon to the MaurylI briefing
of the Intelligence Subcommittee, Chairman Nedzi has become interested in
Slatinshek asked that he be provided with
a detailed rundown on the location of the funds in the various authorization bills
together with the amendments and numbers of troops. He said the Chairman
is also interested in the statements reported in this morning's press and
attributed to Senator Jackson to the effect that the new Soviet missile can
handle a 50 megaton payload. Slatinshek said he would also appreciate a
briefing on what this is all about. I told him I would verify the facts and be
back in touch with him.
10. Met with Messrs. William Phillips and
Norman Cornish, Foreign Operations and Government Information Subcommittee
staff of the House Government Operations Committee, and discussed briefly with
them H. R. 15172 which would codify a portion of Executive Order 11652 relating
to classification and declassification of national security information and
material. In a word Mr. Phillips assured me that the Committee had the best
interest of the Agency at heart in drafting this bill and had assured our exemption
by material contained in Subsection (e)(3) of Section 4 and gave me a copy of the
Committee draft and Committee sectional analysis for our review. 25X1A
11. Talked to concerning
a request relayed to him from his counterpart in the Department of State for 25X1A
release of the Burma/Thailand narcotics reports mentioned by Jack Anderson
to John Brady, House Foreign Affairs Committee staff. I advise hat
the Agency has reviewed similar requests for release of these documents to
several members. I noted, however, that he might pass to his counterpart,
for Mr. Brady's benefit, that a classified briefing would be provided by the
Agency if desired by the Committee Chairman.
