Met with Mr. Robert Lockhart, House Post Office and Civil Service Committee staff, who told me that the regular meeting of the full Committee has been scheduled for 10:00 a. m. , Thursday, 18 November with the same agenda including H. R. 11150, the Ervin bill, that was scheduled for the last meeting when the Committee was unable to reach a quorum. 2. I I Met with Miss Valerie Duval, Legislative Assistant to Representative John E. Moss (D. , Calif. ), and gave her a copy of the unclassified pamphlet "The Central Intelligence Agency" and a copy of Mr. Helms' speech of 14 April 1971. This was in response to her call of yesterday in response to a constituent inquiry. Miss Duval was most appreciative. 3, et with Mr. Ralph Preston, House Appropriations Committee stall, w o o me that he has learned L I that it is the I intention to include the Agency s or age in a supplemental request. Mr. Preston noted that this was quite different from the information Mr. Clarke, OPPB, had given him. Talked to Dr. Al Westphal, House Foreign Affairs Committee staff, who told me that the Committee Chairman is ready to appear before the Rules Committee whenever he is called to testify on S. 18. The bill is pending in Rules Committee but no date is scheduled for consideration. He does expect, however, that they will have the measure cleared through the House this year, has been 5, Met briefly with Carol Berdes, Administrative Assistant to Representative Ogden Reid (R. , N. Y. ), who told me that her final day in the office will be the 16th. Committee staff, called to say that the Committee was proposing another compendium on China and hoped to obtain the cooperation of the Agency in the submission of various studies as we had done in the past. He said he understood that Mr. John Hart had been in touch with someone in the Agency on this and merely wanted to alert us to the fact that the Director will be receiving a letter on this in the near future. Met with Representatives Hebert, Nedzi, Price, Arends and Bray and Mr. Frank Slatinshek, Assistant Chief Counsel, House Armed Services Committee, and briefed them on developments affecting the intelligence community. Met with Representative Paul Rogers and explained that we had not forgotten his continued request for information on "arms for opium" reports in Southeast Asia, but Iwas out of town and we would probably be in touch with him next week. 14. During my conversation with Representative Lucien Nedzi, he raised the question of a newspaper story in the Washington Post regarding an Air America helicopter being shot down in Burma. Checked with Jim Woolsey, Senate Armed Services Committee staff, on the status of the conferee action on the Symington amendment to the Military Procurement bill. Woolsey said the conferees have concluded action on the bill and the House Armed Services Committee staff is drafting the "Joint Explanatory Statement of the Committee of Conference. " He said he would be working with them, however, on the appropriate language 17. After coordinating with Senator Jacob Javits (R. , N. Y. ), and relayed to his secretary information concerning the choice of three dates for Lakeland's appearance before the Advanced Intelligence Seminar. She said she would pass the information on to him and try to be back to us on Monday.
