2. Visited with Bill Cresswell, Administrative
Assistant to Senator John C. Stennis (D., Miss.), and reviewed with him
certain aspects of the personnel case which he is interested in which had
not been brought to his attention by the employee concerned. Cresswell
seemed to be completely openminded and appeared to appreciate the
problem this case posed from an Agency viewpoint. I told him that hope-
fully with reasonable approaches on both sides some solution which was
acceptable to the Agency and to the employee could be worked out. I told
Cresswell I would keep him informed on developments on the case.
Cresswell apparently has received strong family representations on the
employee's behalf, but appears to be satisfied with our approach at this
time.
In response to a request from
WH Division, checked with officers of the
Senate and with the Travel Desk, Department of State, concerning the
:reported travel of Senator Mark Hatfield (R. , Ore.) to Costa Rica.
Department of State representative advised that Mr. Gerald W. Frank,
Assistant to Senator Hatfield in his Oregon office, is scheduled for
travel at an unspecified date possibly later this month, but that they
have no information concerning travel by the Senator himself.
DDP, has been advised.
4. Received a call from Mr. John E. 25X1
Mellon, Administrative Assistant to Representative Robert McEwen
(R. , N. Y. ), who told me he has a letter from al X1
who would like to reactivate his application for employment with the

6. Mrs. McCoy, in the office of
Senator Alan Cranston (D., Calif. ), called and requested application
forms and brochures to be sent directly to a constituent,
sending the forms.
I Office of Personnel, has been advised and is
reported that a San Francisco contact had tried to interest us
in the defection of a Somali student without success and that the sponsor
has arranged for the student to see Mr. Vince Augliere, House
Subcommittee on Foreign Operations and Government Information staff,
apparently to look into what can be done to prolong his stay in the U. S.

9. Spoke further with Robert Hull,
Department of State, concerning their proposed retirement legislation
and, except for a few minor items that have not reached the formal
proposal stage yet, they would not be proposing any new liberalizations.
In response to my request he said he would send a copy of their proposals
for our information when they are finalized,
