25X1 6. In discussing the question of the amendments
to the Foreign Relations Authorization bill, Tom Korologos, of the White House,
repeated his earlier request that we "not do anything" without checking with him.
He complained that certain agencies were trying to get special exemptions for
themselves, whereas the Administration policy was to attack the entire body of
amendments across-the-board rather than piecemeal. I emphasized to him our
concern about the restrictions He said
they understood this and I said we were planning to provide some background
material for possible use by Stennis.
25X1 7? Called Miss Lynn Braydrick, in the office
of Representative Charles B. Rangel (D. , N. Y. ), in response to her query as to
the status of our reply to the Congressman's letter to the Director of 6 June.
I said a letter was en route to the Congressman which he should receive tomorrow
morning and which would answer his questions about the basis for our failure to
provide him with the reports he requested. I added that we were reviewing the
classification of all these reports and were optimistic that at least some of them
could be declassified and made available to the Congressman within the next two
or three days.

25X1 12. Bill Ashworth, of the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee staff, called to say that the Committee would like to
schedule Mr. Helms to appear in Executive Session on SALT verification
at 10:00 a. m. on Tuesday, 20 June. He said that in the Executive Session
they would hope he could cover sensitive matters and provide exhibits, after
which they hoped he would discuss less sensitive aspects of the verification
problem in open session.
He said the Committee had scheduled Secretary Rogers and ACDA
Director, Smith, for Monday the 19th, Mr. Helms and Dr. Foster on
Tuesday the 20th, and Secretary Laird and the Joint Chiefs on the 21st.
I told Ashworth I would check with the Director and be in touch with him.
25X1 13.
25X1 11 and Dave Abshire is trying to get someone else to carry
the ball, possibly Griffin. Korologos suggested I get in touch with Abshire.
We agreed that Harry Byrd or Dominick might be worth approaching.
Korologos said Abshire had tried to get hold of Griffin and I should coordinate
with Abshire. If we struck out, Korologos suggested I call him tomorrow
afternoon since he has his hands full at the moment.
Korologos said we probably should see Mailliard on the conference on
the "Hoover Commission" type bill.
