Accompanied Mr. Bruce Clarke who, in response to his request, briefed Senator Stuart Symington (D. , Mo.) on Soviet strategic missile capabilities to attack U. S. overseas military facilities especially in the Far East. At the Senator's request we were joined by Kathy Nelson, of his staff. Mr. Clarke answered a number of the Senator's questions regarding Soviet strategic air capabilities. The Senator seemed completely satisfied with the briefing. 2. Met with Richard Perle, on the staff of the Subcommittee on National Security and International Operations, and Dorothy Fosdick, Staff Director, and, in response to their earlier requests, referred them to the State Department on the questions regarding the Italians providing APC's to Libya; explained the basis of possible confusion regarding a suspected Soviet mobile ICBM; and referred them to Secretary of Commerce Peterson in connection with the significance of Soviet purchases of U. S. wheat. 25X1 3. Delivered to the offices of Senators George McGovern (D., S.Dak.), Frank Church (D., Idaho), Roman Hruska (R., 25X1 Nebr.) and Henry M. Jackson (D., Wash.) I in which their names were mentioned. Also delivered to Joan Eigelsbach, in the office of Senator Jacob Javits (R. , N. Y. ), a 5 September Izvestyia article which she had requested.
