1. U-2 coverage of South China is of highest priority to the
Intelligence Community. Immediate coverage is needed to evaluate
the threat of the Chicom forces to S. E. Asia.
2. There have been recent additions to the numbers of E W
and AI radars in South China. Mission aircraft will be under radar
surveillance while over China and off shore at distances to 300 NM
at mission altitude.
3. Numerous MIG-15 / 17 aircraft are stationed in South China
at Kunmong, Mengztu and Nanning. 11 - 14 MIG-21 have been reported
in Shanghai-Wuhu area. It is not known if they have a staging capability
from the South China airfields.
